We should not forget that others, just as easily, are telling themselves the same types of stories - oversimplified opinions of others, and most convenient to their points of view. (See, Sonder.)
The key to being inclusive is not to adopt the prevailing social justice (progressive or conservative) viewpoint. Instead, it is to remember that everybody has a story, and in their story they - themselves - are, or want to be, the heroes.
Seek to understand the stories others are telling themselves.
What’s the journey they’re on?
What are the obstacles in their way?
Who’s a fellow traveler with them?
Finally, help them tell a better story.
You’re trying to go there, but when you do ____ it might take you off your course… what if we tried _______? Perhaps that might get us to where you want to go?
It’s not manipulation and it’s not persuasion.
It’s being a person for others.
